★★★1/2 Although the story is not very original, the treatment is enough to justify its Oscar nominations. There is a girl, the only person with hearing in a deaf family, who discovers her vocation for singing in a choir, which leads her -necessarily- to a conflict. That implies a learning, not only of the central character but of her environment, of a change with respect to the world that surrounds them all. Coda does everything in a simple way, of course, without surprises or strange meanders, paying attention to what happens to her creatures. She doesn’t agree with everyone, nor does she believe that everyone has a point, but her choices are made in a nuanced way. And, above all -in the best “realistic” tradition of Hollywood- without falling into either tragic melodrama or ironic comedy, with that medium tone so similar to life that few cinema today can achieve without forceps.
