The company, a subsidiary of General Motors, has been ordered by the California state traffic authorities to halve its fleet of self-driving cars. Cruise is only allowed to drive 50 cars during the day and 150 at night pending an investigation by authorities into the incident.
A robot taxi was involved in an accident with a fire truck in San Francisco on Thursday. He drove through a green light at an intersection but drove with flashing lights and siren on. A passenger in the taxi was injured.
Robot taxis from Cruise and competitor Waymo have recently been allowed to offer paid rides in San Francisco day and night. They received permission from the California regulatory authorities to do so.
But not everyone in San Francisco is happy about that. The city itself and the local traffic authorities, among others, are protesting. They argue that the technology is not yet advanced enough and refer to recent incidents with self-driving cars.
