Pochettino on transfers: No competition between Chelsea and Liverpool

Coaches about poker for additions

The new Chelsea coach Mauricio Pochettino spoke before the second Premier League match day about the transfer poker wins at Southampton’s Roméo Lavia (19) and Brighton’s Moisés Caicedo (21) and a possible signing as the goalkeeper. The Blues have increased their spending this summer to €385.1m thanks to the purchase of the midfield duo. Most recently, Kepa Arrizabalaga (28), a goalkeeper, was loaned to Real Madrid.

“It’s up to the players to decide,” Pochettino said (quoted via “The Athletic”) in view of the commitments of Lavia and Caicedo. Both professionals had preferred Chelsea to Liverpool FC, although the Reds had reached an agreement with the releasing club. “You have decided to come here. It wasn’t a competition between Chelsea and Liverpool. It was her decision to come to us,” said the coach. “The players wanted to come here because I think and hope that they have the feeling that something special, something good is happening here.” It has not yet been decided whether the newcomers will play against West Ham United for the first time (Sunday, 5:30 p.m.). .

Pochettino (via “BBC”) explained that to replace Kepa, who had become the world’s most expensive goalkeeper in 2018, another goalkeeper could be brought in or even added to other positions to complete the personnel upheaval. At the beginning of August, the Londoners presented Brighton’s Robert Sánchez (25) for up to 29 million euros, so it may not stop there. “We think about it. We think about all situations and opportunities that exist on the market. The association is open and examines all possibilities. And there hasn’t been a decision yet,” said the 51-year-old

Chelsea had so far taken money for eight newcomers around RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku (25), Caicedo was the most expensive at 116 million euros. This is offset by income from sales of EUR 255 million. The Blues have sold Kai Havertz (for 75 million euros to Arsenal) and Mason Mount (64.2 million/Man United), among others.
