Painful incident at Iron Maiden’s performance at the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland: drummer Nicko McBrain was hit by a symphonic gong while performing the song “Alexander The Great”.

The accident happened on June 24, but only now have pictures appeared. In a video, Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson can be seen approaching the drummer on the bridge as a symphonic gong runs from side to side behind McBrain’s work tool.

After Dickinson had hit the instrument with a mallet, i.e. a drumstick with a felt head, the gong, which was obviously not attached correctly, came loose from its stand, fell down behind Nicko and hit the musician on the back.

Nicko McBrain continued playing as if nothing had happened

The frontman was visibly surprised by his action before smilingly letting the audience know that nothing worse had happened. He went back to the other side of the aisle and a stagehand reattached the gong to the stand.

Although McBrain was clearly hit, he played the 8-minute blast to the end without any problems and continued to play throughout the concert without even batting an eyelid. In a social media clip just a few months ago, the drummer proudly talked about the gong that was specially made for him in Hamburg and how it was ready at the last minute for the band’s “Future Past” world tour.

“Alexander The Great” has only been live since Iron Maiden’s current tour. But it was already written in 1986 for the album “Somewhere In Time”.
