Fourth most expensive goalkeeper in history
André Onana’s (27) move to Manchester United is on the home stretch and will ensure a substantial transfer win at Inter Milan. The Cameroonian goalkeeper joined the Nerazzuri on a free transfer in the summer of 2022 after his contract with Ajax Amsterdam ended and, according to the club, “The Athletic“ flush a transfer fee of 43 million euros plus 5 million euros in bonuses into the coffers. There have only been two higher transfer profits from the sale of a player signed on a free transfer in the world of football.

Arrived on a free transfer from Manchester United
Between Inter and the “Red Devils” it is only about the details of the bonus conditions before the medical check comes up. Depending on how these turn out, Onana could even overtake Robert Lewandowski (34) in this ranking, who FC Bayern took from BVB on a free transfer in 2014 and transferred to FC Barcelona in 2022 for 45 million euros. Paul Pogba (30) will probably remain the undisputed number one for a long time: 2012 free transfer from Manchester United to Juventus, 2016 for 105 million euros back to Manchester, before going to Turin again free transfer in 2022.
Back to Onana: He decided to join Inter in 2022 after a mixed season and signed a contract that runs until 2027, which should bring him around 3 million euros net per season. As a result, he proved his international class and the Milanese reached the final of the Champions League, also thanks to his sometimes outstanding performance. With this transfer, which will make him the fourth most expensive goalkeeper in football history, Onana should also secure a significant salary increase. For comparison: David de Gea (32), who is leaving Man United on a free transfer after twelve years, is said to have received around 11 million euros net per season.
With Neuer and Ederson: These goalkeepers cost 30 million euros or more

Onana’s forthcoming move to Manchester will probably result in more goalkeeper transfers. On the “Red Devils” side, England international Dean Henderson (26) should be given clearance for Nottingham Forest, for which he was loaned in 2022/23, and Inter will have Yann Sommer (34, FC Bayern) and Anatoliy Trubin (21 , Shakhtar). The contract of 39-year-old Samir Handanovic was not renewed after eleven years in goal for the Nerazzuri.
