From “Barbie” to “Wonka”: These new releases from July to December 2023 are really worth it.

Many new films come to the cinema every week – which ones are really worth it? We once screened for the second half of 2023 and curated the top 9 for you:

1. “Barbie” (July 20)

Director Greta Gerwig once again focuses on a female protagonist in this live-action adaptation (see “Lady Bird”, “Little Woman”). Here, Margot Robbie embodies what is probably the best-known and best-selling doll in the world. She is joined by Ryan Gosling as Ken.

2. “Oppenheimer” (July 20)

The biographical war drama “Oppenheimer” will be released at the same time as “Barbie” hits cinemas. Filmmaker Christopher Nolan reworked the biographical story of the “father of the atomic bomb”, Robert Oppenheimer, and placed it in the context of the post-war period. Starring Cillian Murphy and Emily Blunt.

3. Gran Turismo (10 August)

In addition to the tenth part of “Fast & Furious”, another action-packed street racing film is coming to cinemas this summer. Gran Turismo is the film adaptation of the video game series of the same name. Orlando Bloom was also hired for the adaptation of the successful PlayStation franchise.

4. “Killers of the Flower Moon” (October 19)

Martin Scorsese’s latest work, Killers of the Flower Moon, hits theaters on October 19th. Based on the non-fiction book The Crime by David Grann, the true-crime thriller follows the horrific crime committed against the Osage Indians in Oklahoma in the 1920s. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro.

5. Dune: Part Two (November 2)

The sequel to the science fiction film takes you back to the barren desert planet. The second part continues the story of the supposedly unfilmable material by novelist Frank Herbert, accompanied by Hans Zimmer’s film music.

6. “The Hunger Games – The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” (November 17)

The meanwhile fifth part of the “Hunger Games” series appears eight years after the previous part and represents the prequel to the previous films. In the new part, it is not Jennifer Lawrence who is fighting for mere survival, as before, but the newcomer Rachel Zegler .

7. “Napoleon” (November 23)

For the film adaptation of the life of Napoleon Bonaparte, filmmaker Ridley Scott chose none other than Joaquin Phoenix as the protagonist. Phoenix already convinced in 2019 with his portrayal of the “Joker”. Let’s see if he also gets an Oscar for his portrayal of the French Emperor Napoleon.

8. “Wonka” (December 15)

Shortly before the Christmas holidays, the prequel to the classic film and children’s book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” will be released. “Wonka” tells the story of the life of young Willy Wonka and was filmed by director Paul King.
