The Spanish first division club CA Osasuna will most likely not compete in the Conference League despite sporting qualifications. After the club was informed by UEFA that it had been banned for match-fixing in 2014, an attempt at the Appeal Committee of the European Football Union failed. Osasuna announced this on Tuesday and at the same time announced further legal steps.
Accordingly, Osasuna will appeal to the International Court of Arbitration for Sport CAS. Among other things, the statement said: “Club Atlético Osasuna does not share UEFA’s criteria or the investigation carried out into the case and regrets the wrong message that UEFA is sending to the football world by punishing those who denounce and prosecute corruption . Club Atlético Osasuna will continue to use all legal means at its disposal to fight back against UEFA and end what it sees as a serious violation of its rights.”

The reason for the exclusion is a game manipulation from 2014. In 2020, professionals, officials and entrepreneurs were therefore sentenced by a court to sometimes long prison terms. It was about the fact that two professionals from Real Betis had been paid money so that the Andalusians made a special effort on the penultimate day of the 2013/2014 season against Osasuna’s rival Real Valladolid (4: 3).
Conference League exclusion for CA Osasuna: Athletic Bilbao would move up
Cup finalist Osasuna secured their place in the next edition of Europe’s smallest club competition for the first time by finishing seventh in the table last season. The club had announced that they wanted to fight the possible exclusion “to the last consequence”.
The European umbrella organization ignored the fact that the Spanish judiciary in the 2020 criminal trial described Osasuna as a “victim” of the machinations of some officials. At the same time, the club had taken on the Spanish football association RFEF because it had behaved neutrally in the dispute. Should Osasuna actually be excluded, Bilbao’s Athletic Club would move up. The Basques finished last season in eighth place, two points fewer than Osasuna.
