128 rackets in each box, male and female, will fight for the most prestigious tournament in world tennis
Wimbledon is an unmissable sporting event every July
As every year, the world of tennis reaches its most anticipated season, the London Wimbledon tournament. An appointment with tradition but also with modernity, where the best rackets in the world fight for the valuable trophy.
But,how the most traditional trophy in world tennis works? These are some data.
The top thirty players ranked in the previous season must compete on a mandatory basis. In total there are 128 players in the men’s box and 128 in the women’s who compete, being 32 of each of them seeded according to the current classification at the time of the tournament.
There is a preliminary qualifying phase, both male and female, which also allows participation in the championship. In addition, the organization reserves invitations through the ‘wild cards’ in whose concession the performance of the previous year and the British origin of the player prevail.
The tournament is structured as follows: four rounds, quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals. Men’s singles matches are played to the best of five sets and each of the sets to the best of six games, with at least two games apart.
In the event of a tie at six in the first four sets, a ‘tie break’ or sudden death will be played, but in the last set the victory has had a varied journey.
First, it was only obtained with two sets of margin. In the ‘tie break’ wins who reaches seven points before with a difference of at least two points.
But in 2022, the Grand Slam Board, which brings together the organizers of the four major tournaments on the world tennis circuit, the Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open, announced an agreement to unify the tiebreaker system when it comes to 6-6 in the fifth set. From now on a ‘super tie break’ will be played at ten points.
The board of the Big Four has decided to end the disparity of criteria in each of the tournaments to “provide greater consistency in the rules of this sport and improve the experience of players and fans.”
Until now, the Australian Open had a seven-point tiebreaker in the fifth set at 6-6, Wimbledon, tiebreaker to seven points with 12-12, Roland Garros, unlike two games in the fifth quarter, and the US Open, with a tiebreaker at 6-6 in the fifth.
According to the new ATP scoring system, the winner of the tournament receives 2,000 points, as in other ‘Grand Slam’ tournaments. It is the highest score a player can get on the professional circuit. Even reaching the final scores more (1,200 points) than pocketing a Master 1000 category tournament.
Losing in the first round is rewarded with 10 points and from the second round the score from the previous round is doubled so that in the second round 45 would be obtained, in the third 90, in the fourth 180, in the quarterfinals 360 and in the semis 720.
