Sick father Maarten van der Weijden encourages son thanks to Stichting Ambulancewens | show

Van der Weijden revealed in 2019 that his father had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. He said he found it difficult at the time to see how his father was capable of less and less actions. However, something special happened on Saturday. Van der Weijden was encouraged by his father during the last part of the Eleven Cities Triathlon. Thanks to Stichting Ambulancewens, he was able to be present in Dokkum to support his son.

Stichting Ambulancewens shared a photo of the touching moment on Twitter. It shows how Van der Weijden’s father is lying in a chair, with his son on his left side. ‘Goosebumps… two heroes and what a heroic organization you are!’, someone reacts. And another: ‘What a beautiful moving photo and how nice that his father could also be there for a while.’

Van der Weijden completed the Eleven Cities triathlon on Sunday morning, after being on the road for more than a week. He arrived at the Prinsentuin in Leeuwarden just before 9 a.m. Van der Weijden swam 200 kilometers in a week, cycled 200 kilometers and walked 200 kilometers.
