The courted central defender Yann-Aurel Bisseck (22) will captain the German U21 footballers at the European Championships in Georgia and Romania. The German Football Association (DFB) announced on Tuesday evening that head coach Antonio Di Salvo had previously informed the team at a meeting in the hotel in Batumi.

Bisseck came from the youth team of 1. FC Köln and made his professional debut there at the age of 16, but he made his breakthrough abroad: After stints with Holstein Kiel, Roda Kerkrade and Vitoria Guimaraes, he matured into a regular at the Danish first division club Aarhus GF. Most recently, Bisseck aroused the interest of the Italian Champions League finalists Inter Milan.

Bisseck has played five games for Germany’s U21s so far. The DFB selection starts the tournament against Israel on Thursday (6 p.m. / Sat.1) in Kutaisi, Georgia.
