Due to the great shortage of teachers, Brandenburg is significantly expanding its scholarship program for future teachers in rural areas.

This year, instead of the previous 25, 40 scholarships will be advertised for student teachers who later want to teach at a school in the rural regions of Brandenburg, as the Ministry of Education reported on Thursday. Students studying to become teachers can apply from anywhere in Germany.

Monthly 600 euros are offered as well as an accompanying program with various further training offers and networking events. The country teacher program was launched in 2021, and a total of 49 scholarships were awarded in the two previous years. The funding begins at the earliest from the 5th semester and ends with the completion of the teacher training course within the standard period of study.

“Brandenburg is also an attractive location for young teachers,” said Education Minister Steffen Freiberg (SPD) according to the announcement. With the scholarships, the state offers a further incentive for prospective teachers. “Schools outside of the metropolitan areas often offer smaller classes and close cohesion,” said Freiberg.

There are more than 90 schools to choose from that have a great need for teachers and are also particularly committed to their training. The scholarship holders commit to an internship of 20 days, a practical semester, the legal clerkship and teaching at the school for at least the duration of the scholarship.
