According to sports director Rudi Völler, Hansi Flick is not up for grabs after the German national team’s recent disappointing performances. When asked whether the national coach would stay, Völler replied on Wednesday morning on the “Promi-Takeover” program on “Hit Radio FFH”: “Yes, of course.”

Flick, whose contract runs in his own country until after the 2024 European Championship, is “an absolute top coach who will do everything to ensure that we bring enthusiasm back to Germany in the next few games”. The emerging criticism of the national coach is “a bit part of our business,” said Völler and added: “You have to take it seriously, of course, but you shouldn’t overestimate it either. Flick still carries the “mortgage” from the preliminary round at the World Cup in Qatar on his shoulders. After this, it was decided in a crisis meeting that the 58-year-old could continue as national coach. He said at the time: “We as a team can achieve a lot more than we showed in Qatar. We missed a great opportunity there.” Lessons will be learned from this, he announced. Before the World Cup and at Bayern Munich, Flick showed “what a great coach he is. Every day he thinks about how we can improve a few things, and we will too,” said Völler.

The DFB selection plays Poland this Friday (8:45 p.m.) in Warsaw. On the following Tuesday (8.45 p.m.) the national team meets Colombia in Gelsenkirchen.
