There was a time when the series of the streaming services were immediately recognizable as an alternative to all the mediocre stuff that used to be broadcast on German television. There is not much left of the quality offensive. Instead, Netflix and Co. now prefer to throw out stereotypical coming-of-age series and reality TV formats – and productions that are no different from those that public or private television have been showing for many years.

In any case, “Kohlrabenschwarz” would be better placed in the third program of Bayerischer Rundfunk. The psychologist Stefan Schwab is known as the “Rosenheim Profiler” and solves eerie cases with a police officer, his ex-wife and a pastor. The series, which is based on a series of radio plays, is a bit of a mystery charged with Bavarian customs, a bit of a sitcom, a bit of the crime thriller type in which the investigators happen to have no cell phone reception when the script is in the mood.
