“Demonic”: the creepy plot

Carly Spencer (Carly Pope) discovers that her mother Angela (Nathalie Boltt), with a history of horrendous crimes, is in a coma. To save her, he agrees to take part in a therapeutic project through which he will be able to get in touch, through a neuronal connection, with his mother’s brain. Doctor Michael (Michael J. Rogers) and neuroscientist Daniel (Terry Chen) follow her. During the experience, Carly she finds herself immersed in Angela’s mindscape and discovers the supernatural force that drove her mother to commit the murders of which she is accused. The clinic where her mother is hospitalized seems to be under Vatican control. Priests are “exorcists 2.0”: warriors equipped with highly advanced weapons to drive out the demons that slowly take possession of people. Since then, Carly has been haunted by terrifying visions, for example a crow that devours her arm inflicting wounds which, however, remain even upon awakening from the simulation.

Carly then demands that the experiment be stopped. But she is not needed: together with his friend Martin (Chris William Martin) he will find himself rejecting the demons that creep into their lives and who also take possession of the life of Sam, a friend of Carly.

After many demonic adventures, Carly manages to save her mother Angela, who comes out of a coma and apologizes to her daughter, before dying peacefully. But on leaving, Carly runs into Martin’s car, on fire, inside which is the burned body of Sam. How will it end? Will the protagonists be able to make a clean sweep of all the demons?

“Demonic”: the opinion of the director and critics

«demonic it draws inspiration from a mix of things,” said director Neill Blomkamp. «When the pandemic broke out, I had to block my projects. However, I wanted to do something that we could shoot without restrictions. The references were movies like The Blair Witch Project And Paranormal Activity: I was inspired by horror. In addition, I also had the possibility to use a new technique called “volumetric capture”. (used to make a three-dimensional video with about 260 cameras arranged in a sort of grid or dome, able to see the actors from all possible angles), which lent itself better to science fiction. It was a very difficult environment and not conducive to acting: everywhere they looked there were scaffolding and cameras. The only scene without special effects, one of the scariest, is the one in which Sam passes by Carly’s house in the middle of the night…».

From The Shining to The Exorcist: Fifteen Horror Movies Inspired by True Stories

Despite the movie demonic started from interesting ideas, most of the critics did not appreciate it much. The dream sequences full of computerized effects to simulate parallel reality remain fascinating. The choice of photography is also beautiful, which helps to deepen the mystery. However, the plot leaks and the answers to the questions remain superficial and make us lose a demonic part of its power.

A respectable cast and soundtrack

Carly Pope is the absolute protagonist of the film. Already seen in the feature film The sexiest hospital in the world (2004), plays its part very well. Alongside the actress we find Chris William, in the role of Martin. Scarlett Johansson’s good friend, he appeared in the 2002 in the movie All I want with of Elijah Wood and Mandy Moore and starred in television series such as the Vampire Diaries. Other performers also include South African actress Nathalie Boltt, Canadian actor Terry Chen, Kandyse McClure and Jason Tremblay,

Very interesting element is the soundtrack signed by Ola Strandh. The composer has previously worked in the world of video games and is grateful to arouse anguish and frighten the viewer in sudden and unexpected ways, thanks to his careful mix of electronic instrumentation and silent strings.
