7 key pieces inspired by sports

Since the 2000s, activewear and athleisure have been on the rise, demonstrating that comfort and functionality are increasingly trumping aesthetics. With the lockdowns of the pandemic, this approach has become even more popular. Loungewear and activewear took on a new meaning in everyday life – but the sportier styles in particular were already an indispensable part of our clothing. In the following, seven key pieces are presented that have their origins in sportswear but have long since made it into our daily wardrobe.

Sun Visors: Stylish protection from the sun

Sun visors – also known in German as sun visors – are the ideal headgear for sports activities in the sun. This accessory wraps around the head with an adjustable strap – leaving the top of the head exposed to promote breathability.

Sun visors not only impress because of their functionality, with their variety of colors and sizes they are also a fashion statement that gives the outfit an individual touch.

The pleated mini skirt: Feminine and sporty

Pleated mini skirts are characterized by an elastic waistband and folds. From a functional point of view, the cut ensures ideal freedom of movement and breathability, making it ideal for sports that raise the pulse and require a lot of movement – which is also why it is a classic on tennis courts.

Worn by some notable tennis players who have made history with their winnings, the pleated skirt has become a symbol of female empowerment in sport – but the preppy look is also popular off the court.

The tracksuit: Athletic and casual

The tracksuit is particularly popular with runners. The close-fitting cut and the elastic material provide ideal aerodynamics and freedom of movement, the matching of upper and lower part ensures an even wearing comfort. The breathable, sweat-resistant materials help regulate the body’s heat – whether you’re warming up, performing hard or cooling down.

The tracksuit can also be used off the track: For example, as a stylish three-piece suit with leggings, a top and a bomber jacket that offers both comfort and style

The bikini: In the water, on the beach & as streetwear

Bikinis are indispensable as a piece of clothing when swimming – not to mention a beach holiday! The special fabric from which they are made shows no water marks and dries quickly, the cut is designed for a secure fit.

Despite its purpose as swimwear, the bikini is also often part of an outfit that isn’t worn in the water or on the beach: in the context of the ‘body positivity’ movement, it sometimes peeks through under sheer dresses or mesh T-shirts or turns heads by pairing it with low-rise jeans.

The polo shirt: preppy and iconic

The polo shirt is the epitome of ‘preppy’ style – its history dates back to the nineteenth century when it was first worn for golfing, tennis and horseback riding. The combination of formal – collared – and casual – loose fit, light fabric – made the polo shirt a winning mix of presentable and functional.

Today, the polo shirt is a classic in many wardrobes – from uniforms to everyday outfits, it gives its wearer an elegant yet casual look.

The leggings: Versatile and comfortable

Leggings are a popular piece of clothing for yoga and Pilates. The fabric wraps around your legs like a second skin. Its elastic fabric with a high degree of rebound allows optimal freedom of movement without being restricted by superfluous fabric – which also makes it the ideal companion in everyday life. Over the years, leggings have developed into an indispensable basic part that impresses with its combination options and comfort.

The sports bra

Sports bras are the foundation of every sports outfit – at least for women. Due to its special fit, it protects the breast tissue from injuries and concussions. Due to the functionally-related wide straps and back reinforcement, it is often worn as a top – especially for exercises in the gym.

The sports bra is also significantly more comfortable than conventional bras and is therefore also integrated into everyday life as a piece of clothing.
