Mark van Bommel on championship course with Royal Antwerp after victory over Genk | Foreign football

With videoAfter winning the Belgian Cup last week, Mark van Bommel can now also dream of winning the Jupiler Pro League championship. His Royal Antwerp FC won 2-1 against Racing Genk in the Bosuil Stadium.

Racing Genk took the lead after twenty minutes via Mark McKenzie, but shortly before the break Toby Alderweireld scored 1-1 from a penalty kick. Alderweireld took the penalty after Vincent Janssen had missed from eleven meters after half an hour of play. Last week, Janssen scored convincingly from the spot in the Belgian cup final against KV Mechelen (2-0 win), helping Antwerp to win the cup at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels. In the 52nd minute, Michel-Ange Balikwisha, last week’s maker of the 2-0 in the cup final on the instructions of Calvin Stengs, signed for the winning 2-1 tonight.

Royal Antwerp had a good start to the play-offs for the championship last Wednesday with a 0-2 victory at Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, Bart Nieuwkoop’s club. In Brussels, Jurgen Ekkelenkamp and Mandela Keita then scored the goals in Brussels.

Royal Antwerp is now on 42 points. That is one point more than Racing Genk and Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, who had started the championship competition as shared leaders. Defending champion Club Brugge is in fourth place with 30 points and will no longer play a significant role.

Van Bommel’s team now plays twice against Club Brugge, where Noa Lang could not prevent the defending champion from starting the play-offs with defeats against Racing Genk and Royale Union. Next Sunday, the clubs first meet in the Bosuil Stadium in Antwerp, a week later in the Jan Breydel Stadium in Bruges.
