Six new section controls in West Flanders
Flemish minister Lydia Peeters has commissioned the Agency for Roads and Traffic (AWV) to install so-called ANPR cameras at 6 new locations in West Flanders along Flemish regional roads, Het Laatste Nieuws reports. The cameras take pictures of the license plates of the cars that pass by. During an average speed check, the average speed is measured over a longer distance. The system works with license plate recognition. between the measuring points, the system forwards the data to the federal police. In addition, the installation can also detect signaled vehicles and hard shoulder drivers.
539 section checks
“The locations were chosen on the basis of accident figures and the speeds that are driven there. This data was collected, among other things, via ‘floating car data’ or information from navigation systems. Routes where excessive speed is a problem will therefore be tackled first,” said the minister. When all ANPR cameras are installed, there will be 539 controlled routes on the Flemish highways and regional roads.
It has not yet been decided when the new controls will be introduced. “We will first take this list to the local authorities so that they too can have a say in its effective rollout,” says Minister Peeters. “Flanders is of course convinced that these locations need a route check, but we first check them with the local bodies. They can also request an inspection themselves, in the past this was often forced on them.”
