Tibo Vyvey in Offside: “I believe it will be fine”
Then you think that top sport is going to be difficult, but Vyvey fought back, became Belgian champion in the single scull ten days ago and is now fully aiming for the Olympic Games in Paris.
Tibo Vyvey: “Last year in August I suffered a cerebral thrombosis. That was just after the semi-finals at the U23 World Championships. I was immediately admitted to hospital and rowing was done for the rest of the year. I was there as the top favorite to take a world title in the light single sculls, but fate has decided otherwise. I now know what the symptoms are in advance and I can intervene very quickly. With one phone call I can have an MRI in Ghent. I shed a tear when I was back in a boat for the first time. Or at least had a lump in my throat. It was an emotional moment. It was three or four months ago that I had been in a boat then. That does something.”
Belgian champion
Tibo was able to tick off a first goal ten days ago. He became Belgian champion on the single scull. For Marlon Colpaert and Niels Vanzandweghe. His colleagues but also competitors for the light double scull at the Games in Paris. “We all get along very well. Just, at the start, it’s every man for himself. But as soon as we cross the finish line, we hug each other again to congratulate each other. We also want to make each other better, that’s the intention. Physically I’m clearly fine. I’m also physically the strongest, we’ve seen that in the single scull. Now it’s just a matter of converting that into the double. I believe it will work out. “
