11 million transfer plus since 2016
SV Werder Bremen has extended the contract with sports director Frank Baumann. As the Green-Whites announced on Sunday morning, the collaboration with the 46-year-old will be extended by two years until June 2024. The supervisory board of the Bundesliga relegated team agreed on this with ex-professional Baumann. The decision was made unanimously “after an intensive exchange”. Most recently, SVW won seven second division games in a row under new coach Ole Werner.
“In the discussion about the decision, we as the Supervisory Board have analyzed and critically examined the last few months, but of course also the last few years, of Frank’s work. During this time, the club experienced a turning point with relegation. For us, the key question in the process that has now been completed was: What strategy is Werder pursuing in the sporting area and what does the medium to long-term plan look like? The sporting successes of the last few weeks played a subordinate role. For us, the focus is not on short-term results, but on the creation of sustainable structures. And here, based on an uncompromising analysis of the current situation, Frank has shown over the past few months that he has developed a clear plan and has already got much of it off the ground,” explained Werder’s Supervisory Board Chairman Marco Fuchs.

Werder Bremen relies on Baumann “with complete conviction”
“Frank’s actions are not only characterized by a high degree of reflection and the pursuit of continuous development, but also by the fact that he always puts Werder’s well-being ahead of his own interests and sensitivities. That’s why we decided unanimously and with full conviction for him,” Fuchs continued. Supervisory Board member Dr. Florian Weiß added: “Frank Baumann showed himself to be very reflective in our discussions and was able to convincingly demonstrate that he has answers to the current challenges.”

Sports director Baumann said: “We are still not in an easy time for the club. I therefore appreciate the trust placed in me all the more and look forward to continued constructive and critical support from the Supervisory Board. I still have a lot of energy and passion to lead Werder into a sportingly more successful future together with my managing director colleagues and the entire team as well as all employees worked as director of professional football and scout at SVW. Under Baumann, Werder have invested 97 million euros in new signings since 2016/17 and earned 108.2 million euros from player sales – so the bottom line is a transfer plus of 11.2 million euros in his tenure to date.
