Bayern Munich doesn’t let anything burn in the Bundesliga. Against FC Augsburg, the German record champions won a clear 5:3 (4:1) home win against FC Augsburg on the 24th matchday.
FCA, who won the Bundesliga first leg 1-0 against FC Bayern, had reason to be happy early on: Mergim Berisha quickly gave the visitors the lead (2′). But that’s exactly what got Bayern going: Joao Cancelo with his first Bundesliga goal (15′), Benjamin Pavard with a brace (19′, 35′) and Leroy Sané (45′) closed the gap by the break clear 4:1. “The reaction was very, very good. We then scored the goals in 30 minutes to decide the game,” said Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann on the sports show microphone.
Berisha briefly brought Augsburg to 2:4 with a converted penalty (60th), but Alpohonso Davies made everything clear with the 5:2 (74th). Irvin Cardona’s third goal for Augsburg (90+3) was purely cosmetic. “All in all, we conceded goals that were far too easy, but managed to score three goals. That’s very positive, after all,” summarized FCA trainer Enrico Maaßen to Sportschau.
With 52 points, Bayern Munich will remain the Bundesliga leaders after the 24th matchday. After the fifth away defeat in a row with 27 points as 13th, Augsburg still has a decent cushion on the relegation zone.
Starting eleven comeback for Munich’s Mané
After the triumphant 2-0 win over Paris St. Germain in the Champions League and getting into the quarter-finals, Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann made five changes to his team. Among others, Sadio Mané was back in the starting XI for the first time since his injury on Matchday 14. Pavard and Cancelo were also allowed to start again from the start.
However, Augsburg provided the first exclamation mark. After a throw-in, the Munich defense was a bit unsorted. Berisha elegantly carried the ball past Dayot Upamecano and scored the 1-0 after 112 seconds. But the people of Munich shook themselves briefly and then the Bayern Express got rolling. The hosts repeatedly provided speed and danger, especially on the right side.
Bavaria’s Pavard scores twice and is worth seeing
Cancelo made it 1-1 with a one-off shot from the right half. Then another defender, Pavard, discovered his goalscoring qualities. The French made it 2-1 after a free kick with a volley and a little later made it 3-1 with a remarkable scissor shot from the right corner of the penalty area into the far corner. The Munich team had established clear conditions within just under a quarter of an hour.
In the 4: 1, Sané finally dusted off a rebound from FCA goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz with his head. In the second round, too, the Munich team initially started out dominantly. Manè cheered after a goal from almost eleven meters (50th), but was offside. Augsburg got their second goal from a Berisha penalty.
At that point, Munich had already taken the big pressure off. Augsburg scored their third goal after Davies made it 5-2 when, in injury time, Cardona escaped the Bayern defense with a back pass from the baseline and shot in from five yards to make it 5-3.
