Football legend Gary Lineker has been sidelined for the time being from the BBC’s Match of the Day programme, BBC news.

Lineker found himself in the middle of an uproar when he criticized the British government’s new immigration policy on social media.

Lineker hosted the BBC’s Match of the Day programme.

– We have taken in far fewer refugees than other major European countries. This is just an immeasurably cruel policy targeting the most vulnerable in society, no different than what we saw in Germany in the 1930s. Am I wrong?, Lineker wrote in his tweet earlier this week.

According to Lineker, the BBC has forced him to leave his seat.

According to the BBC, Lineker’s social media writing has violated the company’s guidelines and he will be sidelined until it is clear how he should act on social media.

– We have never said that Gary should not have opinions or that he cannot have an opinion on things that are important to him, the BBC’s press release says.

Ian Wright announced on Twitter that he would not be appearing on Saturday’s show in solidarity with Lineker. Alan Shearer has joined Wright and has also informed the BBC that he too will not appear on the show.

On Tuesday, British Home Secretary Suella Braverman said that the country’s government’s plan is to prevent people who entered the country illegally from seeking asylum in the country.

According to the BBC, Braverman has commented on Lineker’s tweet and said it belittles the unspeakable tragedy of the Holocaust.

Lineker has hosted Match of the Day since 1999 and earned £1.35m as host in 2020-21.

– Well, it’s been an interesting few days. I am delighted that this ridiculously out of proportion story seems to be dying down and look forward to appearing on the BBC’s Match of the Day,’ Lineker wrote on Thursday.
