Successful test run of flax canoe in Kortrijk

In 2023, Kortrijk artist and water sports enthusiast Danny Veys will take on the challenge and experiment of using flax as a raw material when building a new boat. Using innovative techniques, he and Francis Soenen are working on a canoe they want to use to navigate the Leie this summer. This afternoon the canoe went into the water for the first time.

The test run turned out to be a success. The next time the canoe will be launched is Sunday 18 June. Then they sail the entire Lys, no less than 130 kilometers. From the source in France to the mouth in Ghent. An art book will be produced from the project. And the flax boat itself will later be given a beautiful place in the Texture museum in Kortrijk.
