On Wednesday (March 1st), Chris Brown was a guest at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin with his “Under the Influence” tour. During the course of the show, there was an incident in which the 33-year-old took her cell phone from a young woman he had brought on stage for a song and threw it into the crowd. Countless videos of the incident have gone viral on TikTok. Neither Brown nor the person concerned themselves have spoken (as of March 2, 10:30 a.m.).

During the roughly two-hour show, there’s a segment where the R&B star presents parts of his older song catalogue. Including “Take You Down” from the 2007 album EXCLUSIVE. For this track, as at other concerts on the tour, Brown brought a female fan from the audience onto the stage. The chosen one is placed on a chair in the middle and seductively danced around by Brown and his background dancers. The interlude also includes a lap dance by the singer and ends with a closing circle of male dancers’ bodies around the central chair.

In the Mercedes-Benz Arena, however, Brown’s chosen broke this routine. While sitting on stage, she picked up her cell phone and filmed along. The star took it from her and placed it in her lap. After grabbing it a second time and continuing to film just before the end of the song, Brown then took the device from her again and this time threw it off the stage.

Another video published on TikTok shows one of the background dancers returning the smartphone to the owner after the concert.

The incident is hotly debated. Most of the reactions express understanding for Brown and a certain glee, but there are also voices that ask whether the young woman wasn’t overwhelmed.

Always in conversation

Chris Brown has been in the headlines for weeks, if not always directly on its surface. He has recently been accused of systematically barring black women from entering his VIP area at a London nightclub. He has denied this. He also complained at Rihanna’s Superbowl performance that he still hadn’t gotten rid of the woman thug label. In 2009, the then 19-year-old hit Rihanna during a relationship dispute. Despite these long-term consequences of his behavior, Chris Brown is still one of the most successful musicians in the world and has been for years. At least the negative headlines don’t seem to damage his sex appeal and his marketing enough to make him poor.

The tour runs until March 26th. On the 4th and 25th there will be further concerts in Germany – in the Olympiahalle, Munich and the Festhalle in Frankfurt am Main.
