Meal delivery company Just Eat Takeaway suffered a loss of 5.7 billion euros last year. In recent years, the Dutch Takeaway.com merged with Just Eat and the combined company took over its American industry colleague Grubhub. Those deals are now worth billions of euros less on paper, which leads to the loss of billions.
This is partly due to economic headwinds and higher interest rates, writes Just Eat Takeaway with its annual figures. Excluding this item, the operating profit for 2022 amounts to 19 million euros. A year earlier there was still a loss in the books of 350 million euros. According to the company, all business units “contributed significantly” to this improvement, with the largest gains in the UK and Ireland, Southern Europe and North America, among others.
Turnover increased by 4 percent to 5.6 billion euros last year. The group processed a total of 984 million orders.
Last month it was already known that the meal delivery company had processed fewer orders in the last three months of 2022 than a year earlier. During the height of the corona pandemic, online demand for delivery meals rose sharply due to lockdowns, but now that restaurants are open again for almost a full year, that interest is waning.
