Nelson Weiper received praise from the highest level after his historic goal in FSV Mainz’s 4-0 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach.
“Talent, technique, will and conviction – he has all of that,” said 05 sporting director Martin Schmidt about the youngest Mainz Bundesliga goalscorer in history at 17 years and 344 days.
Weiper came on for Ludoviq Ajorque in the 85th minute and headed the score in injury time in what was only his third short Bundesliga appearance.
“It shows that he wants to hit the quota he has had for years at a higher level,” said Schmidt.
However, Weiper, who has passed through all of Mainz’s youth teams since 2012, didn’t have much time to celebrate. Already on Saturday afternoon he was back in action with the U19s in the Junior Bundesliga.
Schmidt’s advice to Weiper: “He has to keep doing his homework, be diligent and hope for a chance. He can still do a lot more.”
