Justine Ghekiere is overall winner in Tour of Valencia
In the final calculation, she was 1 second over her teammate Ashleigh Moolman at AG Insurance-Soudal Quick-Step.
It is Ghekiere’s first professional victory. In addition to the overall victory, Ghekiere also wins the King of the Mountains classification.
After yesterday’s queen stage and Ashleigh Moolman’s double, the peloton again had to deal with some altimeters in the final stage, but a lot less than in the previous stage, about 1365 compared to about 2400 on Saturday. On the menu three categorized climbs, the Alto de Serra Grosa half way through the course, 1.8 km at 5.1%, and further in the final a short climb; the Alto de Barxeta of 1.3 km at 6.3% and finally the Alto de Barx, 6.7 km at 4.3% on average. The top was 15 km from the finish, after which it descended to Gandia.
It took a long time for the early breakaway to take shape, eventually a large group of 16 managed to break away from the peloton, including one compatriot: Justine Ghekiere. They never got much ahead, at 25 km from the end the bonus was 1:40, but the group of favorites didn’t get much closer either, because many teams were represented at the front.
Uphill the leading group broke into pieces, with a small group we went to the finish. Elise Uijen did not want to wait for the sprint and attacked at 10 km, she was joined a little later by Justine Ghekiere who has now virtually taken over the leadership position from her teammate Ashleigh Moolman. In the sprint, Elise Uijen showed her fast legs and made it ahead of our compatriot. For the 19-year-old Dutch, it is her first professional victory. Ghekiere takes the overall win and succeeds Annemiek van Vleuten on the honors list.
