In a written statement, Dionne Warwick has paid tribute to the late Burt Bacharach, the composer behind her hits I Say a Little Prayer and Do You Know the Way to San Jose. In a text for the Los Angeles Times, the singer wrote: “Losing Burt is like losing a family member. These words that I have been asked to write are written with sadness at the loss of my dear friend and musical partner.”

Dionne Warwick: “May he rest in peace”

The 82-year-old continued in her statement: “We laughed a lot and had our arguments, but we always found a way to let each other know that our family roots were the most important part of our relationship. My condolences go out to his family to let them know he is resting peacefully and I will miss him too.”

Warwick was born in New Jersey and got her big break as a backing singer in New York, where she met Burt Bacharach. With the lyricist Hal David they celebrated immense success. In the early 1970s, the trio separated after a dispute.

Warwick sued the songwriters for breach of contract. In the late ’70s, however, the feud ended – Bacharach and Warwick reunited in 1985 for That’s What Friends Are For. The track won the Grammy for Song of the Year. It was Bacharach’s fourth nomination in this category – the first time he had won in his then 22-year career.

Warwick’s active career

Warwick is currently the subject of the HBO Max documentary Dionne Warwick: Don’t Make Me Over. Warwick also collaborated with country star Dolly Parton on the gospel duet “Peace Like a River,” a song Parton wrote.
