Scams via the internet: the number of reports is the tip of the iceberg

A few people from the police and ARhus were on the market in Roeselare this morning to warn passers-by about cybercriminals. Scammers who try to steal your money online with a ruse.

“Cybercriminals are getting smarter and smarter. There are also many other techniques, such as friendship fraud or identity fraud. People send you a Whatsapp in the name of your daughter or son. All these techniques ensure that they become more effective and effective. We want a baton for stitches,” says Sandra Vanneste of ARhus.

Number of reports is increasing

It is important to raise awareness, because at the end of last year the RIHo Police Zone received many calls from fake bankers. They notice that the number is increasing year after year.

“We counted 453 acts of internet fraud about last year,” says Curd Neyrinck, chief of police of the RIHo police zone. “That ranges from bank card fraud to phishing and hacking. And we find that people are only 10 to 15 percent willing to report. So it concerns a large number of facts.”
