Defending champions Real Madrid have suffered a setback in their battle for the Spanish championship. Coach Carlo Ancelotti’s team lost 1-0 (0-1) at RCD Mallorca on Sunday. An early own goal by Real central defender Nacho Fernández (13th minute) made the decision on the holiday island. In front of 18,258 fans, the guests had the best chance to equalize with a penalty kick, but Mallorcan-born Marco Asensio missed the point in the 60th minute. Mallorca’s goalkeeper Predrag Rajković saved the ball after conceding the penalty earlier.
The “Royal”, in which Antonio Rüdiger was in the starting XI and Toni Kroos came on as a substitute, are still five points behind leaders FC Barcelona in second place. However, the Catalans are still playing against Sevilla FC on Sunday evening (9 p.m.) and can continue to overtake the Champions League winner. Third-placed Real Sociedad could also move within three points of Los Blancos in their home game against Real Valladolid.
