Sassuolo gives Atalanta first defeat since November, AS Roma beats Empoli | Foreign football

Atalanta have failed to climb from fifth to second in Serie A. The team of coach Gian Piero Gasperini lost 1-0 at Sassuolo.

Atalanta played for an hour with one man less. Danish midfielder Joakim Maehle received a red card after intervention by the video referee. Deep in injury time of the second half, Atalanta had to continue with nine men, after a red card for the Colombian substitute Luís Muriel.

Sassuolo scored in the 55th minute through Armand Lauriente. The Frenchman came in from the left and hit the far corner: 1-0. At Atalanta, the Dutchmen Hans Hateboer, Teun Koopmeiners and Marten de Roon all had a basic place.

Atalanta lost on November 13, the last round before the World Cup started, for the last time in Serie A. The team was eliminated by Internazionale in the quarter-finals of the Italian cup tournament last week.

AS Roma

AS Roma recovered from the elimination in the quarter-finals of the Italian Cup against Cremonese (1-2). The team of coach José Mourinho won 2-0 against Empoli in the competition. Roma needed two early goals, from Brazilian Roger Ibañez (2nd minute) and Englishman Tammy Abraham (6th minute).

The Dutchmen Georginio Wijnaldum and Rick Karsdorp were missing in the selection of AS Roma on Saturday. Wijnaldum was on the bench against Cremonese three days earlier. The former Feyeno player returned after a long time with an injury.

AS Roma is in third place in Serie A, 13 points behind leader Napoli.
