Bernadette Chodron de Courcel “died peacefully and surrounded by her family,” her daughter said. She turned 93 years old on May 18.

Chirac was the only French first lady to hold a political office under her own name: she was a municipal councilor of Corrèze from 1979 to 2015.

Jacques Chirac, to whom Bernadette had been married since 1956, died in 2019 at the age of 86. He was President of France from 1995 to 2007 and was also Prime Minister twice and Mayor of Paris three times.
