Leeds United have found a buyer for young striker Joe Gelhardt. The 20-year-old forward, who made his Premier League breakthrough last season, will join AFC Sunderland in the Championship by the end of the season. According to English media reports, the loan does not include a purchase option
Gelhardt made his Premier League debut in October 2021 and contributed two goals and four assists for the remainder of the season. Among other things, he scored the winning goal on matchday 29 in the 2-1 (1-0) win against Norwich City after being substituted in injury time. Now he should help Sunderland in the second division in the promotion race. After 28 match days, they are in ninth place with 41 points, but are within striking distance of the playoff ranks (to the table).
“I know how big the club is and I’m really looking forward to getting to know the lads and helping them. I spoke to the head coach and the style of play seems to suit me perfectly. I’ve watched Sunderland on TV this season and seen positive attacking football and I can’t wait to get involved,” Gelhardt said of his move in the press release. With a market value of €8m, he is the most valuable English center forward aged 20 or under.
