FC Volendam with new formation towards 2023, but no ‘concrete football’

FC Volendam has closed 2022 with a reasonably good feeling. The last exhibition game of the year was won 4-1, partly due to a hat-trick from Robert Mühren. “The first was of course perfect. Good cross from Daryl van Mieghem, I could walk in well.”

“It doesn’t say much”, Mühren responds to the 4-1 victory over NAC Breda. “We play in a new system (5-2-3 with rising backs, ed.). We showed a number of good things in it today. At least we can move forward with that. We now play in this new line-up to no longer keep an open house.”

Volendam lost three times in the preparation. According to Mühren, the defeat against Sevilla was not a disgrace. “You try a number of new things. We are working hard to hone it in. We are now in the phase where we have to get points, it doesn’t necessarily matter in what way.”

FC Volendam is firmly at the bottom of the Eredivisie with six points. Trainer Wim Jonk knows that things have to change. “There is a winter break to evaluate things properly. You might adjust things based on that. Make small nuances in your way of playing. We did that.”

The New Orange must build in more security, but Jonk refuses to use the term ‘concrete football’. “Everything depends on your selection and players. If we do our things well and try to give away less space, then it will benefit our game.”

Henk Veerman was missing from Volendam with a fever and Jonk expects to have him back against SC Cambuur,

Volendam confirmed the arrival of Florent Sanchez today. The 19-year-old French-Brazilian footballer is rented from Olympique Lyonnais for six months. Sanchez plays in midfield and mainly played in the second of Lyon.

Volendam will play the first game of the second half of the season against SC Cambuur on January 8. The kick-off in Leeuwarden is at 2.30 pm.
