Pelé was treated for the last weeks at the Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo.
According to the news agency Reuters, the hospital informed that the football legend died of a simultaneous malfunction of several important organs. This, in turn, according to the hospital, was due to the progression of the colon cancer, combined with Pelé’s “previous state of health”.
Pelé’s cancerous tumor was operated on in September 2021. After that, he was treated with other cancer treatments.
According to Reuters, Pelé’s hip was operated on in 2012, but the operation failed and after that the football legend had difficulty walking without aids.
In February 2020, Pelé’s son Edinho said that his father’s declining health made him depressed.
Pelé was hospitalized since the end of November. Kely Nascimento also published a picture from the hospital bed five days before her father’s death.
