Between Christmas and New Year, one of the biggest winter sports highlights of the year traditionally begins with the Four Hills Tournament. sport.de offers an overview with the most important information about the 71st edition of the classic in ski jumping.
How does the Four Hills Tournament work?
Between December 28, 2022 and January 6, 2023, four competitions will take place on four different hills in Germany and Austria. The results from the first and second round are added together.
Whoever has collected the most points after the fourth competition wins the overall tournament ranking and thus also the “Golden Eagle”.
The mode of the Four Hills Tournament
After a qualification, in which the best 50 jumpers move into the first round on the following day, it continues in a knockout mode. In the first round, the ski jumpers are divided into pairs and jump against each other in a direct duel. Qualifier winner meets last, runner-up meets 49th – and so on.
In addition to the winners of the 25 duels, the five best defeated athletes (“lucky losers”) also come into the second round. If a duel ends in a draw, the jumper with the better result from the qualification will advance.
