Some love it, others hate it abysmal: “Last Christmas” by Wham! from 1984. Husband and wife team Hannah and Tomas Mazetti hated the Christmas anthem so much that they quickly raised £50,000 to buy the license rights and get rid of the song.
“It’s all funny because people either love the idea or hate it!”
Speaking to the Daily Mail, 33-year-old Hannah Mazetti explained that her disdain for the song began when she was 20 and working in an Oxford cafe where her boss played the tune ad nauseam. “The café owner had planned a super cozy Christmas season and brought his own CD with a bunch of ‘hits’ on it,” she explained. “He was only there infrequently, so he didn’t quite understand the anguish felt by the rest of the staff as ‘Last Christmas’ played for the 111th time on a workday.” Despite a multitude of streams, it was Song last year at Christmas, for the first time in 37 years of existence, number 1 in the charts.
The idea came up, matching the song title, last Christmas
Mazetti went on to say that she and her husband Tomas came up with the idea of buying the rights to the song after a friend suggested that such a feat was (theoretically) feasible. On the origins of her venture, she said: “It all started last Christmas when we asked friends how much they would be willing to pay to never hear the song again. It turned out to be quite a lot, and when the song went viral again this November, we were reminded of that. Then someone told us that theoretically it would be possible to buy the rights and then take it off all streaming platforms! We asked around in our circle of friends and word got around quickly. This is all funny because people either love the idea or hate it! So maybe next Christmas will be the last time at Christmas!”
So many donations have already been collected to get rid of the song
So far, the Mazettis’ campaign has raised just over £51,500 from around 330 donors. However, they are still a few million pounds short of their goal. The rights to ‘Last Christmas’ belong to Warner Chappell Music UK and are estimated to be worth £15-20million, according to the Daily Mail. The couple has put their financial target at the low end of that estimate. If they do, Mazetti says they will send the master tapes to a nuclear waste disposal site in Finland “where they will lie dormant for at least two million years.”
The Mazetti stressed that she and her husband had no animosity towards Wham! cherish: “I’m sorry, but that’s the way it has to be. We hate wham! not, but we hate this song. It’s because it’s played 5,000 times a day. We felt that something had to be done to support people who were suffering like us.” Of the song’s lovers, the couple quipped, “Some people seem to love the song 500 times a day to listen. And these people are our enemies.”
