Box office milestone makes “Avatar 2” one of the highest grossing films of all time

“Avatar 2: The Way Of Water” is making the box office ring: At the end of Tuesday (December 27), the film broke the milestone of one billion US dollars in box office earnings. In addition to the production of James Cameron, only five other films in history managed to exceed that number within two weeks: “Avengers: Endgame”, “Avengers: Infinity War”, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, “Spider Man: No Way Home” and “Jurassic World”. At the same time, the “Disney” flick that started on December 14 set another record. To date, a total of three million cinema tickets have been sold in Germany alone.

Only two films have grossed more this year

The second “Avatar” part is currently in 51st place among the most commercially successful films of all time. In order to catch up with its predecessor, i.e. the leader of the ranking list, a few cards still have to be sold. The science fiction blockbuster grossed over 2.9 billion US dollars worldwide, including some re-enactments. Looking at this year’s box office hit parade, “Avatar 2” now ranks third – only “Jurassic World 3: A New Age” and “Top Gun: Maverick” made their production companies even happier.

More parts a question of money

The fact that “Avatar 2” has already generated a billion US dollars is remarkable, especially when a few external factors are taken into account: parts of the USA have been paralyzed by snowstorms in the past few days, the corona virus is rampant in China, and there are also the Christmas holidays. James Cameron recently made it clear that his flick would have to gross more than $2 billion to be profitable – and thus justify more sequels. In any case, the already shot “Avatar 3” and “Avatar 4” will flicker across the screen. Whether the series will be continued after that is still in the stars: In 2015, “Jurassic World” had achieved the same box office at a similar speed and brought in a total of 1.6 billion dollars.
