Shock for Bayern! Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer (36) announced his end of the season on Instagram.

Neuer wrote that he broke his lower leg while ski touring on vacation.

According to BILD information, it was a marrow fracture in the right tibia, i.e. inside the bone and not an open fracture. He was operated on in the BG Unfallklinik Murnau (70 kilometers south of Munich).

The injury comes shortly after the German World Cup. Neuer went into the tournament already battered. He was out for weeks due to an acromioclavicular joint injury.

During this time, Sven Ulreich had to represent Bayern’s number one for seven games. During the short holiday break after the messed-up tournament, Neuer wanted to recover for the remaining games. But now the next setback for the goalkeeper!

The Bundesliga season ends on the last weekend in May. Since the downtime is around half a year, the Bayern captain’s season is over. Apart from Ulreich, Bayern only have a 19-year-old goalkeeper in their squad in Johannes Schenk.

How did Neuer get injured? Ski touring is a special type of winter sport on skis that is practiced off-piste. A mountain is climbed on skis before you ski down into the valley.

What do Bayern say about this?

CEO Oliver Kahn: “The news of Manuel’s injury shocked us all. We will stand by his side and accompany him on his way to his comeback. He will overcome this serious injury and come back to the pitch as strong as ever.”

Sports director: Hasan Salihamidžić: “It’s terrible that Manuel had such an accident and of course all our thoughts are with him. I spoke to him yesterday and today, the operation went as well as possible. Manuel will receive every support. He is a strong personality and will come back. I wish him all the best, he can rely on FC Bayern!”

National coach Hansi Flick also commented: “This is very sad news at the end of the year. We are glad that the operation went well and wish Manu a speedy recovery. That is currently the most important thing.”

Neuer’s statement in full

“Hey guys,

What can I say, the end of the year could have gone better… While I was trying to clear my head while ski touring, I broke my lower leg. Yesterday’s surgery went very well. Many thanks to the medical team! However, it hurts to know that the current season is over for me.

Take care of yourselves!

Your Manuel”
