Fishermen affected by the sharp increase in operating costs can apply for a special financial compensation. The Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV) makes a maximum of 30,000 euros available per entrepreneur as support to reduce the high costs. Fishermen are expected to be able to apply for this bridging scheme in the first quarter of 2023.

Minister Piet Adema (LNV): “The fishing industry faces major challenges and is also hit hard by high fuel prices. This causes uncertainty about the future among entrepreneurs, their families and communities. This allowance gives entrepreneurs a helping hand. I am aware that the amount does not cover costs. It should therefore be seen in conjunction with financial support to make the fishing fleet more sustainable. Fuel-saving engines will also be an important part of this.”

EUR 10 million has been made available for the bridging scheme. An entrepreneur can receive a one-off maximum of 30,000 euros over a period of three tax years. The scheme is currently being worked out. More information about this will be available on the RVO website early next year.

Sustainable fishing fleet

In addition to the high fuel prices, the sector has to deal with far-reaching structural changes, such as a reduction in fishing areas and regulations in the field of sustainability. A total of 444 million euros is available until 2030 to support the fishery in the transition to a future-proof, sustainable and economically viable fleet.

This is intended, among other things, for investments and innovations in the field of sustainable fishing techniques, modern and clean engines and aid to chain companies, such as fish auctions. In addition, the amount will be used to finance the restructuring scheme for fishing vessels affected by Brexit. This scheme has already been opened. The registration period runs until November 30.
