Álvarez Most Valuable Pro
Mexico was the penultimate of the 32 participants to present their squad for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar. With Hirving Lozano, among other things, the Germany shock from the 2018 World Cup is in the 26-man squad, which coach Gerardo Martino announced on Monday evening. The 27-year-old Lozano scored the winning goal against the DFB team in the first group game four years ago.
Also included is striker Raúl Jiménez, who has not played since August due to a groin injury. The 31-year-old suffered a fractured skull in a Premier League game almost two years ago and was sidelined for around nine months afterwards. The most valuable player in the Central American squad for the World Cup is defender Edson Álvarez from Ajax Amsterdam with a market value of 35 million euros, followed by Lozano with 28 million euros.
Martino has been preparing for the tournament with an extended squad in Girona, Spain for a few days. The former Leverkusen player Chicharito was already missing from this squad, and a few days ago the association also announced that Sevilla attacker Tecatito would be out of the World Cup due to an ankle injury. Mexico will start the World Cup in Qatar on November 22 against Poland. Other opponents in Group C are Argentina and Saudi Arabia.
