In an entertaining game, Ecuador had several chances to take the lead, but failed three times because of the aluminum. This will be their undoing late on.

Thanks to a last-minute goal from Joker Amad Diallo, Ivory Coast won the duel between Germany’s next two World Cup opponents. The West Africans beat Ecuador 1-0 (0-0) in a game with numerous chances and thus temporarily took second place in Group E behind the selection of national coach Julian Nagelsmann. Substitute Diallo scored in the 90th minute.

In front of 68,274 spectators in Philadelphia, the West Africans took advantage of one of their last chances and secured three important points. Germany will face the Ivory Coast next Saturday in Toronto, and the duel with Ecuador will follow on June 25th in East Rutherford.

That’s how the game went

There was little to be seen of a defensive encounter. Both teams kept looking for a way forward. Ecuador in particular had good opportunities in the early stages. John Yeboah, who was born in Hamburg, hit the crossbar (16th), and a little later Alan Minda also hit the crossbar (23rd).

The South American supporters dominated the scene in the stands. Thousands of yellow jerseys could be seen in the Philadelphia Eagles stadium. As soon as Ecuador crossed the halfway line, things got loud.

But the Ivorians also had chances. Hoffenheim’s Bazoumana Touré narrowly missed the goal with a dangerous low shot (17′). Shortly afterwards, Elye Wahi missed from close range (18th).

Yan Diomande in particular drew attention from the right side. The Leipzig speed dribbler posed problems for the Ecuadorian defense on several occasions. Piero Hincapié, once a double winner with Bayer Leverkusen and now at Arsenal FC, also didn’t always find the right means against the 19-year-old.

Shortly before the break, Wilfried Singo caused danger again with an overhead kick. After the break the pace remained high. Ecuador’s attacker Enner Valencia hit the outside post from an acute angle (46′), while Wahi only hit the crossbar on the other side (52′).
