Bags are not only an integral part of many high-end brands’ runway collections, they are often defined by their so-called “it” bags. Unsurprisingly, the global luxury handbag market is estimated to reach $35.4 billion by 2031.
The Spring/Summer 2023 season was no exception, showing a wide variety of bags of different shapes and sizes. Four categories dominated the catwalks.
XXL bags
At Louis Vuitton, Nicolas Ghesquière featured oversized wallets worn as clutches under the arm. The XXL bags were adorned with a huge LV logo and long, golden chains, the clasps of which encircled the wrists of the models.
In New York, Joseph Altuzzarra presented a spacious beige canvas bag with brown leather straps.
At Stella McCartney, the vegan leather bags featured oversized shoulder straps in the brand’s signature chain design.
Designer duo Proenza Schouler introduced large leather drawstring bags in various colors such as cobalt blue, yellow and black patent leather.
Tote bags and hobo bags
At Jil Sander, Luke and Lucie Meier showed off a large peachy leather hobo bag.
Prada handbag is crafted from smooth black leather and features a wing-shaped drawstring closure.
Designer Jonathan Anderson sent an elongated, oval-shaped bag made of lilac-colored leather onto the catwalk for Loewe and decorated it with a red tropical flower.
Bottega Veneta presented a structured handbag made of smooth brown leather with a cut-out handle.
Bags with chain straps
Chanel reinterpreted the classic chain-strap bag and sent a drawstring version to the runway in black patent leather. The example is decorated with pearls and a Chanel logo
Versace showed a black leather bag with silver studs, Medusa logo and a large, detachable chain strap.
At Alexander McQueen, there was a white bag with a silver chain strap and the brand’s signature ring detailing.
Exceptional novelties
Moschino showed off several whimsical handbags, including a bucket bag with an underwater motif.
JW Anderson had a zippered bag that featured a laser print of a Hawaiian sunset.
Victoria Beckham’s clutch bags featured long fringes on the runway.
Mini spiked handbags complemented several looks at Acne Studios.
