Sancho is absent
The England squad for the World Cup in Qatar is led by the two most valuable Three Lions, Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham. The midfielders of Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund, who belong to an eight-man group of players worldwide with a market value of €100m or more, have been nominated by national team coach Gareth Southgate, as well as Newcastle’s Callum Wilson and Leicester’s James Maddison, who are back after a long break as well “Red Devil” Marcus Rashford, who is also making his comeback after a mixed performance in the meantime.

Overall, the squad value of the English, who last made it to the final at the European Championship, is 1.26 billion euros. The team’s most experienced player is Chelsea’s Raheem Sterling, who has 79 caps. Reece James, Ben Chilwell and Emile Smith Rowe, among others, are injured. Former Dortmund player Jadon Sancho is also not part of the squad. The Manchester United winger has not featured prominently in the past 12 months.
“We wanted to keep a good balance. We also had to nominate players who are not at 100 percent yet. We think we’ve got everything covered so far,” said Southgate at the association’s headquarters in Burton-upon-Trent. England will meet Iran (21 November) in the preliminary round of the World Cup, followed by further meetings in Group B against the United States (25 November) and Wales (29 November).
