Controversial World Cup advertising Jumbo still on television in the evening

Jumbo’s controversial World Cup advertisement was still shown on television on Wednesday evening, despite the announcement that the supermarket chain would immediately remove the ad from the tube. The advertisement features dancing construction workers. The company was criticized for the poor conditions in which migrant workers had to build the football stadiums for the championship in Qatar.

Jumbo announced on Wednesday afternoon that it would delete the advertisement. But the commercial could still be seen in the evening on Comedy Central, among others. Also in the commercial break of BBC First, a channel of the British broadcaster aimed at Dutch people, the film with hustling construction workers passed by. On social media, some people reacted with surprise because they could still see the ad.

In a response by e-mail, Jumbo now promises that the TV commercial will not be seen anywhere after tonight. “Unfortunately, a small group of themed channels, including Comedy Central, are taking a little longer to get the commercial off their schedule.”
