Netflix is under fire again after The Crown, about British royals, plans to alter Queen Elizabeth’s famous 1992 speech.
The year 1992 was catastrophic for the queen. A devastating fire broke out at Windsor Castle, and the year was also overshadowed by the prince Charles’s, the divorces of Prince Andrew and Princess Anne. In her speech, the queen named the year Annus Horribilis (horrible year).
In The Crown, that speech is rewritten. In the speech, Imelda Staunton, who plays Queen Elizabeth, says, among other things, “the mistakes of the past”.
Netflix has previously defended itself against criticism, stating that The Crown is a “fictional dramatization”. Recently, the streaming service added the words to the description of the trailer for the fifth season of the series.
– They (Netflix) have rewritten history by changing the speech, an inside source commented to the newspaper.
– This only reinforces the perception that The Crown is taking huge liberties with the truth and causing damage to the monarchy’s reputation.
The fact that Netflix intends to show the last moments of Princess Diana’s life in the upcoming fifth season has attracted plenty of criticism, among other things. The new season also deals with the twists and turns in Prince Charles’ private life at the time.
Even the former Prime Minister of Britain John Major has called for a boycott of the series.
The fifth season of The Crown will be released on Netflix on November 9.
