Review: Girlpuppy :: When I’m Alone

Talented young indie singer/songwriters continue to sprout in the United States. Next example: Becca Harvey aka girlpuppy from Atlanta. The 23-year-old is audibly shaped by the many other successful acts in the genre such as Snailmail, Girlpool, Faye Webster and Phoebe Bridgers.

An EP (“Swan”, 2021) is now followed by girlpuppy’s debut WHEN I’M ALONE, and it sounds as if the woman had never done anything other than composing soft, slightly melancholic dream pop/indie songs. In parts, WHEN I’M ALONE has become a classic coming-of-age album, in “Revenant” she sings about the turmoil of being a teenager and adolescence.

“Wish” is a nice scratchy little indie hit that has you tapping along in an instant, about the normal madness of love. “Destroyer” is also a song about a love that doesn’t want to succeed, and this song is perhaps very typical for girlpuppy: On the surface, her sound seems light and airy, but that there are latent, darker layers lurking there is not to be expected Ignore.
