The week of Drenthe: horses, sheep, bombs and burglars

Residents feel unsafe at the holiday parks at the Ermerstrand, more than a thousand horses on the Zuidlaardermarkt and the number of burglaries is increasing. This and more happened last week in Drenthe. An overview.

Migrant workers at the holiday parks around the Ermerstrand give permanent residents of the parks an unsafe feeling. They are tired of noise pollution, used syringes and rubbish. They are also done with the municipality of Coevorden, which, according to the residents, is not doing anything about it. That is why they are taking measures themselves and have installed a fence, among other things.

1,005 horses and eighteen donkeys were for sale on Tuesday at the 821st edition of the Zuidlaardermarkt. A radiant day that went very well and which the checking vet was also very satisfied with. “In the past, the horses stood in the middle of the stalls, there was noise and drunk people. Nowadays everything is well separated. The animals all look good.” That is why Mayor Marcel Thijsen thinks that the Zuidlaardermarkt can always continue to exist as an animal market.

Dead sheep from a wolf attack are compensated, but farmers do not have to count on compensation for a sheep miscarried by a wolf attack. That has been decided by the Council of State. According to the judge, it is not possible to prove that the sheep miscarried due to an attack on the herd.

A fireworks bomb caused damage at restaurant Napoleon in Emmen on Thursday morning. Camera images show how someone places a fireworks bomb in front of the eatery and runs away. “So it seems that someone has deliberately tried to destroy something in our house,” says owner Jeroen Merkx. The blast shattered some windows and warped windows. A chandelier has also fallen down.

Burglars strike again more often in Drenthe. Where there were 351 burglaries last year between January and September, there were 495 in the same period this year. That is an increase of 41 percent. The number of burglaries has risen in Meppel in particular. Last year there were nine, and so far there have been ninety burglaries this year. This makes the municipality the largest increase in the Netherlands.
