Jürgen Klopp shoots against Man City and Co.

On Sunday, the eagerly awaited match between Liverpool FC and Manchester City will take place in the Premier League. However, it is not just a duel at eye level in tabular terms. The Reds don’t stand a chance against their big opponent on most other levels, says coach Jürgen Klopp.

In recent years, the fight for the championship in the Premier League has often been decided in direct duels between Liverpool FC and Manchester City. That shouldn’t happen in 2022/23, because the champions are already 13 points ahead of Jürgen Klopp’s team.

Inevitably, the former BVB coach was asked at the press conference before the game (Sunday 5:30 p.m. in the sport.de ticker) what his club could do to keep up with Manchester City. Klopp’s answer was clear.

Klopp: “No one can keep up with City”

“You won’t like the answer. And you already have the answer,” the German said in the direction of the questioner. “No one can keep up with City. They have the best team in the world and then sign the best striker on the market. No matter how much it costs, you just do it,” Klopp pointed out in clear words about the financial resources that Man City are available thanks to support from the Middle East.

He knows that this answer will not go down well in Manchester and elsewhere, Klopp noted: “But you asked the question and you know the answer.”

His Liverpool FC cannot act like City on the market, “that’s impossible,” said the LFC coach, who, in addition to Manchester, also highlighted Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle United in this context: “There are three clubs in world football, who can do whatever they want financially. And that’s all legal and okay.” But his club has to go other ways and try to keep up with the sheikh clubs.

He heard Newcastle’s sporting director say there are no limits for the “Magpies”. “And he’s right! He’s absolutely right. There are no limits for Newcastle. Congratulations. But other clubs have limits,” Klopp referred to the rain of money that Newcastle received thanks to the Saudi takeover in 2021.
