Hospitals in Munich under pressure due to rising number of corona cases after Oktoberfest Abroad

Currently, 478 hospital beds in Munich are occupied by corona patients. This is an increase of 61 percent since Tuesday last week. Compared to the start of the Oktoberfest, this is an increase of 137 percent.

There are now 39 people infected with the corona virus in the intensive care unit. A week ago, there were still 24 patients. Health Minister Karl Lauterbach fears the numbers will rise even further. He expects “more serious cases and a burden on the IC departments”. “It is a pity that it has come to this,” he says to the broadcaster RTL/ntv.

Experts had warned in advance that the corona numbers in Munich would peak due to the Oktoberfest, which took place from September 17 to October 3. The traditional beer festival and folk festival in the Bavarian city has not been organized in the past two years due to the corona crisis. This year, the event took place again, with few restrictive measures. In total, millions of people have flocked to Munich’s Theresienwiese for Oktoberfest.
