An intercity with hundreds of passengers on board was derailed in the night from Saturday to Sunday between Weert and Haelen in Limburg. A spokesman for the fire service said no injuries were reported. The NS reports that the passengers will be taken to Roermond by a replacement train. This train also came from Roermond.
According to ProRail, there were about 250 passengers on the train. However, the security region reports that it concerns 500 passengers. “It concerns many young people who visited the fair in Weert,” said a spokesperson.
The front part of the train is derailed. That train is still upright, which can also be seen on images from local media. It is still unclear how the train derailed. Research is being done. Several emergency services are on site. After the derailment, the chief conductor made a tour of the train and found, according to the NS spokesperson, that no one was injured.
Due to the derailed train, the train also stranded in the opposite direction, the NS spokesperson reported. There were fifteen passengers on board that train. They are taken to Eindhoven by bus.
The NS Travel Planner shows that no train traffic is possible between Eindhoven and Roermond until at least 06.45 on Sunday morning due to the stranded train.
